The European Commission’s Hydrogen Strategy states that Hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources will be critical to achieving the EU’s climate-neutral economy by 2050 and, above all, will aim to integrate Hydrogen by decarbonising the industrial, transport, building energy production and storage sectors across Europe. The EU’s ambition is to increase the share of hydrogen in the European Union’s energy structure from 2% in an ambitious case to 24% in 2050 (Hydrogen Roadmap Europe: A sustainable pathway for the European Energy Transition, 2019). The EC Communication on a hydrogen strategy for climate-neutral Europe states that in 2030, the In Europe, about 40 GW of energy should be used for Hydrogen production.

In Lithuania, Hydrogen from renewable energy sources is not yet produced. Nevertheless, Lithuanian companies have potential: it is the development of Hydrogen technologies in Lithuania that would contribute to the decarbonization of the country’s industrial, transport, energy and building sectors; Implementation of the objectives of the National Energy Independence Strategy in terms of reducing the impact on climate change and ambient air pollution, competitiveness, energy security and the participation of the country’s business in accelerating transformation.

Several possible projects, which includes hydrogen technologies are expected in near future in Lithuania: applications of Power to Gas concept for hydrogen introduction into national gas grid, implementation of smart cities ideas at local level, introduction of green hydrogen into ammonium production etc. All of it will require essential amounts of green hydrogen, which will be produced using solar and wind energy systems. As price of hydrogen is close related to the price of electricity and renewables are highly unstable, hydrogen technology group concentrates on building the simulations and experimental models helping to produce and use hydrogen in the most technologically and economically reasonable way.
